Where were you on October 10, 2007? If you’re like many of us, you were at the First Annual Industry Appreciation Luncheon at the Embassy Suites in Charleston. Our speaker was Aubrey McClendon of Chesapeake. The first Achievement Awards were presented to Chelsie Hupp and Megan Kleb of WVU. We were fortunate to have our regional director, Cathy Pyles, and the ADDC Secretary, Donna Siburt, in attendance. With over 200 people, this is still our largest event to date.
Fast forward 5 years. A new location, a new speaker, a slightly different name and you’d be attending the 5th Annual Energy Industry Appreciation Luncheon. Thanks to charter member Pam Beaver, our Keynote Speaker was Kyle Mork of Energy Corporation of America. Kyle’s speech “The Marcellus Shale: Hype, Hysteria, and the Truth” kept everyone’s attention. He explained the benefits that the Marcellus will have for the Appalachia area, especially since it is bigger than any other shale play. It is projected that the Marcellus could alone supply 20 of domestic natural gas. Kyle went on to debunk some of the hype associated with horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Before concluding his address, Kyle and Pam had door prizes for a few of the attendees.
Continuing the days events, Kay Hillabold , presented a donation to Bo Sellers of the Pierpont Technical College. This donation will enable one student to complete classes at the college’s Rig School. Also in attendance was this year’s college achievement award winner, Myridia Boggs. Birdie Lipscomb and David Beer presented Ms. Boggs with a certificate of achievement and a $1000 scholarship. Ms. Boggs was accompanied by her mother and her professor, Dr. Sam Ameri of WVU.
Last year’s Toothman Rice Member of the Year, Melinda Johnson, then introduced Carol Pizzino. Carol stepped in at the last minute for Don Nestor, who unfortunately was called away on business. This was the 4th time Toothman has presented a Member of the Year. Each year the candidate has been an outstanding member of the club, this year was no exception. Charlene Tenney, the WVDDC charter president, was the 2011 recipient. Congratulations Charlene!
Margaret Rogers concluded the meeting with recognition of member’s employers. Our employers support the WVDDC, and its members by sending them to meetings, donating to our fundraisers, and speaking at events. This is just a small recognition of our thanks and gratitude.
So, where will you be in 2016?
