Second Annual Golf Outing a Success!
Four years ago we started our Scholarship Program by awarding a pair of $1000 scholarships to students enrolled in the Engineering Program at WVU. Upon her graduation, one of those recipients became a member of our club. More recently we have awarded scholarships to high school seniors within our State who plan to pursue their educational goals with an eye toward employment in the energy industries. This year we are proud to again offer four scholarships to high school seniors. In addition we will be giving one scholarship to a deserving college student already enrolled in one of WVU's energy programs.
This event is the primary fundraiser for our Scholarship Program.

In the wee hours of dawn they traveled from all over to come to the Second Annual WVDDC Golf outing. Over 20 teams registered to play this year, and 11 companies sponsored signs. Spear headed by our own A J Smith, our volunteers gathered at 7 am on July 13th, to get ready for the participants. Each player was given a golf towel, golf ball and as many golf tees as they could carry. (Rumor has it that the black golf tees are lucky.) Melinda Johnson and Erin Means signed everyone in and made sure they received their door prize tickets. Passing out the goodies were Tammy Shingleton, Heather Odom, and Mary Ann Straley. Sharon Ross and Anita King sold Mulligans and donation drawing tickets. (For those of you non-golfers, a Mulligan is basically a do over.) The Mulligans were a big hit!
At 8:00 am sharp, the golf carts were off. Winding their way through the Bridgeport Country Club golf course, the teams found their assigned holes, and awaited the siren signaling them to start. As the siren blared, the sound of swinging golf clubs could be heard across the landscape. Since we had such a great crowd, a drink cart was provided. This didn’t stop A J and Erin from making their trip around the course. As the did last year, our dynamic duo rode their mighty steed, (golf cart) across the course, checking on teams, advising them on the location of the drink cart.
Fast forward 4-1/2 hours, and over the knoll the first teams began returning to the club house. As the put away their clubs and headed to lunch, their scores were recorded on the big board. It takes a while for 20 teams to finish—that windmill hole is a real game changer. By 1:00 pm, all teams were back relaxing in the cooling atmosphere of the Bridgeport Clubhouse. As everyone finished their lunches, A J and Maggi started announcing the winners of the day. Greg Kozera was the winner of the 50/50 drawing, taking home $275.00. Each golfer took home a door prize ranging from Carhart jackets and bags, to a Fossil watch, golf ball grabbers and camp chairs.
All in all the event was a great success. The true winner was the WVDDC Scholarship fund. Through the efforts of the volunteers, the assistance of the Bridgeport Country Club, and the support of so many sponsors and participants, this event raised over $5500 for scholarships. We already have promises of teams for next year!
